On Wednesday, Penelope Bourbon expanded its stave-finished Architect series with a trio of bottlings paying homage to golf.

The whiskeys — named Hole 1, Hole 2 and Hole 3 — are imagined as something deeper than a passing nod to golf season. They pay tribute to the brand’s founding in 2018, when founders Michael Paladini and Danny Polise dreamt up the venture over 18 holes of golf. Penelope would eventually be acquired by MGP Ingredients, and is now one of the most sought-after bourbon favorites on the market.

Each Architects of Golf bourbon boasts the same specs: Bottled at 94 proof, aged six years and distilled from a mashbill of 60% corn, 36% rye and 4% malted barley. The whiskeys were then finished at different intensities and over different lengths of time in American Oak staves, creating three distinct flavor profiles.

Hole 1 is described as the most approachable, featuring flavors of sweet oak, roasted nuts, vanilla and soft leather. Hole 2 leans into a more “structured profile” with hints of dark chocolate, French toast and spice, while Hole 3 embraces its stave influences with aromas of caramel and dried red fruit, followed by flavors of chocolate mousse, vanilla, cherry and lingering oak.

“Golf and bourbon are similar in that they both bring people together. Penelope started as an idea on a golf course, so we felt it was only natural to expand our Architect line into this area,” Michael Paladini, Founder and VP of Strategy at Penelope Bourbon, remarked in a news release.

“Architects of Golf is a nod to the subtleties of the game and where some of our best ideas took shape. The introduction of American Oak Staves into our blends reflects how small adjustments can have a big impact on the overall product.”

The bourbons will roll out through selected retailers later this month at a suggested retail price of $59.99. The news release describes them as the “first three bottles” in the collection, so keep your eyes peeled for future releases, potentially numbering all the way up to 18.
