Inside Jack Daniel’s New Tanyard Hill Rye Whiskey

On Wednesday, Jack Daniel’s unveiled the latest limited-edition whiskey in its Single Barrel Special Release Series: Tanyard Hill Rye, the latest in its annual series of barrel-proof whiskeys.

The expression was aged in one of the oldest barrelhouses at the Lynchburg distillery, built atop Tanyard Hill in the early 1960s. The location sits next to Coy Hill, home to the brand’s previous Special Release, and is known for the dramatic seasonal temperature swings that influence maturation.

Jack Daniel’s Master Distiller Chris Fletcher said the series allows the distillery to explore unique warehouse locations and how they shape whiskey character.

“The Special Release series has been a great way for us to showcase our craft of whiskey making here in Lynchburg,” Fletcher said in a news release. “Like Coy Hill was before, Tanyard Hill has been one of the hidden gems for locals familiar with the distillery grounds. We’re now bringing more people into this secret and can’t wait to see what our friends think of this special Tennessee Rye Whiskey.”

Tanyard Hill Rye is distilled from the classic Jack Daniel’s rye mashbill of 70% rye, 18% corn and 12% malted barley and filtered through charcoal before entering new American white oak barrels in November 2015. According to the brand, the whiskey offers aromas of dark fruit and sweet oak, flavors of candied mint, dark chocolate and baking spice, and a finish with clove, sweet tobacco and oak.

The whiskey will be bottled at barrel proof, ranging from 130.2 to 148.8 proof, and will be available in limited quantities across the U.S. this month at a suggested retail price of $79.99 per 700-milliliter bottle.
