On Thursday, Holland America Line, a mid-sized cruise line, announced that it’s adding a barrel of Buffalo Trace bourbon to its beverage program. The cruise line shared that the barrel was curated by Sazerac Master Blender Drew Mayville and Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Famer Freddie Johnson, who were joined by employees of the cruise line.

“We strive to share experiences with our guests that they won’t find anywhere else,” Holland America Line Vice President of Food, Beverage and Rooms Divisions Michael Stendebach said in a news release. “Collaborating with Buffalo Trace to craft a signature bourbon has been an incredible journey. Drew and Freddie guided us to select a barrel that will resonate with our guests and is the perfect representation of our two iconic brands.”

Mayville is a fan of the Holland America Line, according to the brand, and endorsed the cruise ship company for Sazerac’s Barrel Select Program. Team members were invited to Buffalo Trace Distillery, where they chose from four barrels in Warehouse D.

According to Holland America, the group chose Barrel #002, which hosts a bourbon with “intense notes of oak and spice on the nose with a smooth, lingering finish.” Barrel #002 was filled in December 2015 and spent years aging in Warehouse U on Floor 5.

Guests can order bourbon from the barrel fleetwide starting in March.

“We aimed to select an expressive and distinctive barrel for Holland America Line, confident that their guests would enjoy trying something truly unique to the cruise line,” Mayville said.

On Feb. 8, Sazerac announced that Buffalo Trace was offering Blanton’s fans the opportunity to purchase a barrel of Blanton’s Gold Bourbon. Proceeds for the sweepstakes would go to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

After each $100 donation, entrants will receive a shot at the sweepstakes to win the barrel, a trip to the distillery with seven guests, a private barrel selection experience, a private lunch at the distillery and $20,000 so winners can purchase bottles from the barrel. The winner will be additionally gifted the empty barrel as a souvenir of the experience.
