On Wednesday, Remus Bourbon unveiled a new bourbon release honoring baseball legend Lou Gehrig, continuing the brand’s baseball-themed whiskey series following previous Babe Ruth collaborations.
Remus Lou Gehrig Reserve Bourbon is produced by Ross & Squibb Distillery, formerly known as MGP Ingredients, and will be limited to 9,665 bottles nationwide — the number of times Gehrig appeared at the plate over the course of his Hall of Fame career.
The bourbon was crafted by master distiller Ian Stirsman using four separate mashbills, which the brand says was a nod to Gehrig’s famous No. 4 jersey. The final product is bottled at 109 proof, referencing the 109 RBIs Gehrig recorded during the 1926 season, which marked the first of his 13 consecutive 100-RBI seasons.
Here’s how the blend breaks down:
- 70% bourbon distilled in 2017 from a 49% rye mashbill
- 14% bourbon distilled in 2016 from a 44% rye mashbill
- 8% bourbon distilled in 2019 from a 36% rye mashbill
- 8% bourbon distilled in 2019 from a 99% corn mashbill
The whiskey is described as opening with cinnamon, nutmeg, leather and clove aromas before moving into brown sugar, plum and marshmallow flavors, finishing with baking spice, cedar and lingering cinnamon notes.
Packaging elements continue the baseball theme, featuring an embossed baseball diamond-style label and a baseball bat-inspired cork closure.
There’s also a QR code on the back label that, when scanned, leads to a landing page that shows what Gehrig accomplished during the specific plate appearance tied to the bottle number that was scanned.
The launch also includes a charitable component tied to Live Like Lou Foundation. Remus Bourbon said it will donate $9,665 — one dollar for each of Gehrig’s career plate appearances — to support ALS research and affected families.
The brand also plans to donate additional funds through a social media campaign tied to engagement on launch posts, up to $2,130 in recognition of Gehrig’s famous consecutive games streak.
The release follows growing interest in collectible whiskey launches tied to sports history, particularly limited-edition bourbons linked to iconic American athletes and memorabilia culture.
