Jamaican rum producers, Hampden Estate have recently announced the launch of a first-of-its-kind tasting set and will guide drinkers through the distillery’s different “marks.” The set contains the famous 8 Marks which are meant to demonstrate the versatility of the brand’s fermentation and distillation.

Marks (or marques) are rums that correspond to an unaged distillate with specific characteristics in terms of style, aromatic intensity, flavor, body, and structure for a distillery. For Jamaican rum, marks come from the specific flavor profiles produced by column and pot stills. These marks are used to create their own rum by blending several types together but can also be sold on the market for the blending industry.

Each of Hampden Estate’s marks is created through specific distillation techniques and the manipulation of the ratios of its raw materials: molasses, cane vinegar, dunder, muck and the estate’s spring water. The rich diversity of rums produced at Hampden Estate is displayed by these marks and is showcased by eight miniature bottles in the tasting set.

The 8 Marks Collection is a self-contained tasting kit with 200ml samples of each rum which are all unaged and bottled at 60% ABV. The set also includes an outline of the chemical analysis of esters for those who are interested in the intricacies of rum making.

The Hampden Estate 8 Marks collection is now available in the US at select retailers.
