Eagle Rare 30 Debuts as the Oldest Age-Stated Bourbon in Buffalo Trace History

On Thursday, Buffalo Trace Distillery announced the release of Eagle Rare 30, the oldest age-stated bourbon in its history, as the distillery continues to test the limits of long-term aging in American whiskey.
The release follows the 2024 debut of Eagle Rare 25 and comes from barrels aged in Warehouse P, one of the distillery’s experimental aging facilities designed to study how climate and environment affect ultra-aged bourbon.
“Eagle Rare 30 is not simply about time, it is about what time can reveal,” Buffalo Trace Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley said in a news release. “Aging whiskey in Kentucky comes with inherent challenges: evaporation increases and barrel influence intensifies, which can lead to overly dry or astringent characteristics in older bourbons. The environment within Warehouse P allows us to manage those effects, softening the extraction and preserving the nuanced flavors that define exceptional ultra-aged bourbon.”
Warehouse P is part of a broader set of experiments aimed at determining whether extended aging can elevate bourbon in ways similar to whiskies produced in more temperate climates such as Scotland and Japan. The approach reflects a shift from traditional aging limits toward controlled, long-term maturation.
The 101-proof bourbon is described as deep mahogany in color, with layered notes of fruit, caramel and oak, followed by a long, balanced finish shaped by extended time in the barrel.
“Through careful monitoring over time, we’ve seen how controlled, extended aging can bring a whiskey to a point of exceptional smoothness and layered complexity,” Wheatley added. “Eagle Rare 30 is a clear expression of that. It is distinctive in a category where nuance is hard-earned.”
The release will debut through a partnership with Bonhams, which will host an online auction featuring 15 lots tied to the Eagle Rare lineup, including early bottles of Eagle Rare 30 and a complete collection of the brand’s portfolio paired with a private distillery experience.
Following the auction, Eagle Rare 30 will roll out in limited quantities beginning in May 2026 through Sazerac’s distribution network, with a suggested retail price of $12,500.
“Eagle Rare has long been a study in patience and progression,” said Jake Wenz, president and CEO of Sazerac and Buffalo Trace Distillery. “Eagle Rare 30 brings that philosophy into focus, revealing the depth, character and distinction that only time can achieve. It represents a new benchmark for American whiskey and affirms bourbon’s place among the world’s most exceptional spirits.”
The release joins the broader Eagle Rare lineup, which includes 10-, 12-, and 17-year-old expressions, as well as Double Eagle Very Rare and Eagle Rare 25.
