Michter’s US★1 Barrel Strength Sour Mash Kentucky Whiskey is produced by Michter's Distillery in Louisville using a distinctive grain recipe that sets it apart from traditional bourbon and rye categories. The whiskey enters the barrel at 51.5% ABV and matures in toasted and fire-charred new American white oak barrels before batching at barrel strength. It is bottled at an average of 55.75% ABV and typically retails for around $120.
The palate is rich, but fruity, with flavors like an apricot upside-down cake (caramelized apricot and yellow peach, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, ginger, buttery vanilla pie crust).
That pear note sticks around and builds, becoming more candied and fresh on the midpalate before transitioning to barrel-driven notes of cocoa powder, dark vanilla bean, and cinnamon red hots that simmer with a generous, hugging warmth.
A very solid, truly well balanced release. Oak, sweetness and moderate spice oscillate evenly. Michter’s Sour Mash is very good in barrel-proof form — no surprise, but I’m happy it’s here.

House Review
Nose:
Gentle, pleasant nose full of cinnamon, gingerbread, tiramisu, cherries, blueberries, clove, butterscotch, cornbread and soft oak.
Taste:
Silky mouthfeel. The palate brings a good bit of heat and excellent balance between sweet, spice and oak: seared oak, cinnamon, nutmeg, brandied cherries, cocoa powder, almonds, tobacco, clove.
Finish:
The finish opens with barrel char, coffee grounds, Clove, sassafras and brown sugar, then moves into a profile of graham cracker and cherry pie.
Overall:
A very solid, truly well balanced release. Oak, sweetness and moderate spice oscillate evenly. Michter’s Sour Mash is very good in barrel-proof form — no surprise, but I’m happy it’s here.
