The Canadian government has issued a product recall on vodka seltzer-branded tumblers believed to contain hazardous levels of chemicals. As of May 23, 43 were reported to have fallen ill after ingesting liquids contaminated with the cup’s toxic coating.
The stainless steel tumblers were distributed as a free promotional gift to customers who bought bulk packs of NÜTRL vodka seltzer between April 29 and May 17. Health Canada believes that around 33,000 contaminated bottles were given out at licensed liquor stores across the country.
Testing found that the tumblers contained “some levels” of sulfuric and phosphoric acid trapped between the inner walls.
A recall issued on May 24 wrote:
“This solution may release when the tumbler is filled with liquid, posing a potential risk of serious injury. The interaction between the solution and the tumbler may also result in elevated levels of iron, chromium, and nickel. A range of health effects has been associated with ingestion of these substances, including burning of the lips, tongue, throat, stomach, and/or other tissue damage, and nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps and diarrhea.”
The cups were manufactured in China by Sunscope, a large-scale product development company headquartered in Southern California. On its website, Sunscope advertises co-branded merchandise with TD Bank, Corona Beer, Gatorade, Nespresso and Coca-Cola. Sunscope says it reached out to local health officials after it detected the manufacturing defect.
In a news release distributed by NÜTRL Canda, the brand wrote:
“Consumer safety is our top priority. Together with Sunscope and their distributor Staples Promotional Products Canada, we are working with Health Canada to proactively notify consumers.”
Affected customers are urged to email [email protected] or call 1-866-846-1778.
