A man in Mansfield, England, has quit drinking after reportedly damaging a door he knocked on with a shovel following a visit to a local pub, reported U.K. media property Chad.
Police received reports of a forced entry around 8 p.m. on June 22. After arriving at the location, officers found a “heavily intoxicated” 30-year-old Ricky Moore, per Chad.
Moore informed police that he believed he was outside of his brother’s home and was hoping to borrow a phone charger, Chad reported. The man said he had no intentions of actually entering the property and simply wanted to let his “missus” know where he was.
According to the report, the door was damaged enough to justify Moore being issued a fine of £1,025 ($1,258) to replace it.
“It was an expensive door,” the magistrates said at court, according to Chad.
Moore has faced previous convictions related to drunk-driving and drunk and disorderly behavior. This time, he admitted to criminal damages, informing the court that he had been drinking at a local pub, per Chad.
“I wanted to charge my phone to let my missus know where I was,” Moore said, according to the report. “I am sorry – it was a silly mistake.”
Magistrates were told that Moore has since stopped drinking and has started a new job, Chad reported.
