These Berries Make Us Merry: Sipsmith Releases Limited Edition Very Berry Gin

What creative concoctions will you whip up with Sipsmith’s Very Berry Gin? (Photo: Sipsmith)

Sipsmith has released a new limited edition installment to its “Sipping Series.” Very Berry Gin, released Tuesday, boasts a bouquet of fresh, berry flavors.

Sipsmith wrote that the gin is “expertly handcrafted, bursting with the flavours of juicy handpicked hedgerow fruits, making it our fruitiest gin yet.” Sounds delightful — but what are hedgerow fruits? And what are they doing in this gin?

Hedgerows are a category of shrubs best known for their use as hedges in suburban neighborhoods. Not only do these hardy plants work as beautiful property markers, they often grow some of gin’s favorite fruits. A few of these fruits are damson plum, elderberry, blackberries and sloe fruit. We’ve already written about sloe’s involvement with gin, which you can read here.

For a more detailed look at hedgerows (and why you shouldn’t cut them), check out this video by Wild Your Garden with Joel Ashton.

With these hedgey fruits, Sipsmith hopes to “evoke flavours of autumnal berries.” The fruits of choice are plums, cherry and cranberry — all hand-picked, Sipsmith noted.
