A truck and its driver have been missing for almost a month after leaving São Paulo with a cargo full of Brazilian rum known as Cachaça. According to Itatiaia, it was carrying 523 liters of 51 Cachaça and valued at about USD $12,000 or $60,000 Brazilian Real. The case is currently under investigation by the Civil Police of Minas Gerais (PCMG).
“The PCMG informs that this is a procedure for assigning the 2nd Civil Police Station of Contagem and, for the time being, the facts cannot yet confirm or rule out this hypothesis of whether or not there is a relationship [with other thefts at Ceasa]. No line of investigation is discarded,” stated police, according to Itatiaia.
The man, who wished to remain anonymous, responsible for hiring the transport service used to carry the rum indicated that this was his first time using the delivery company in question.
“When we go to load, we work with a risk management company. I pass on the driver’s information, [the company] analyzes it and releases it or not for loading. In this case, [the company] released. In other words, there was nothing that discredited him,” the delivery contractor told Itatiaia.
The man who hired the driver was last in contact with him in Poços de Caldas to the south of Minas Gerais which is around 430 km (267 miles) from the final destination.
“He left the industry loaded at night. The other day, I talked to him at 7:41 am, when he was in Poços de Caldas and I was waiting for him in Contagem. From lunchtime on, he didn’t answer the phone anymore. The number we had for his boss didn’t work. I waited until the other day, as it could be a mechanical problem, but he didn’t show up to unload,” Itatiaia was told.
The delivery contractor said the investigation is up to the police and the insurance company now. Currently, there are no indications as to why the driver disappeared and the situation remains a mystery.
