On Wednesday, Dewar’s announced the newest release within its Double Double series: Double Double 21-Year-Old Mizunara Oak Cask Finish. The Bacardi-owned scotch brand claims its latest whisky merges the distilling traditions of Japan and Scotland.
The whisky is bottled at 46% ABV and has a suggested retail price of $149.99 per 750-milliliter bottle. It is available at spirit retailers across the U.S.
“The unveiling of Dewar’s Double Double 21 Year Old Mizunara is a toast to change and growth,” Dewar’s Vice President of North America Brian Cox said in a news release. “This release reflects our steadfast dedication to crafting exceptional whisky experiences that not only bring people together but harmonize tradition and innovation. When enjoying this whisky, let it be a catalyst for shared moments of joy and celebration with friends and family in a timeless toast to the blend of Japanese craftsmanship and Scottish tradition.”
The latest release within the Double Double series follows its October offering, which hosted a massive age statement of 37 years. Dewar’s Double Double 37 Year Old had an eye-watering suggested retail price of $1,799 for a 375-milliliter bottle and was presented with a set of distinctive glass tumblers.
The brand claims Mizunara oak requires over two centuries to reach full maturity, and the tree often grows crooked. This makes it a challenging species of oak to work with in crafting casks. Yet the brand claims the struggle is worth it, as Mizunara-aged whiskies are often balanced and pure.
Dewar’s claims the Mizunara Oak adds heady sandalwood and tropical coconut aromas to the scotch whisky, and the 21-year-old scotch finishes clean with a touch of vanilla.
“The journey of creating this expression has been an exploration of flavors and craftsmanship,” Dewar’s Master Blender Stephanie Macleod said. “Together, my team and I introduced a distinctive twist to our award-winning Dewar’s Double Double 21 Year Old by finishing it in Japanese Mizunara Oak casks, creating a new and exciting whisky. This latest iteration in the Double Double Series is a testament to our commitment to delivering unparalleled experiences to our connoisseurs.”
