The Beam Suntory-owned Islay scotch whisky brand Laphroaig announced the launch of the Elements Series on Tuesday. The brand claims the series is meant to highlight the production process at the Islay distillery.

The Elements Series launched with Elements 1.0, a product of three experiments.

Elements 1.0 was made from a combination of cloudy and semi-cloudy wort. The distillers implemented an 8.5 and 11-ton mash in the whisky-making process, honoring Laphroaig’s production process both from the past and present. Finally, the whisky is exclusively composed of Islay malt.

“Elements is a series that we hope will give our friends a peek into the art and science of making Laphroaig,” Laphroaig Distillery Manager Barry MacAffer said in a news release. “Our distillery profile is so iconic and we always want to retain this as the heart of every bottle, while allowing room to experiment and innovate.”

The 58.6%-ABV scotch is the first in the series, with more expressions to follow in 2024.

Laphroaig claims that each release will have a “series of easter eggs” meant to chronicle the experiments that went into the process behind each expression.

In September, Laphroaig launched a 36-year-old expression with just 200 bottles available. The scotch whisky priced at $5,849 was called The Peat Edition and was meant to celebrate the natural element which is so essential to the scotch brand’s distinctive style.

Elements 1.0 is currently sold out, according to Laphroaig’s website. Should the spirit return to shelves, the suggested retail price is £170 ($208).

“This first release showcases the raw materials that we use in our whisky, especially 100% Islay malt,” MacAffer said. “As an Islay native this is an extra exciting whisky that I think will bring a little bit of our rugged island to Friends around the world.”
