The Macallan 77 Year Old was introduced as a new expression in the Scottish distillery’s Red Collection. This spirit hosts a 77-year-age statement and is now available at the brand’s travel boutiques, according to an article published in The Moodie Davitt Report on Thursday. The scotch dates back to 1945 and has a suggested retail price tag of $87,000.
The Red Collection hosts a core range of 40-, 50- and 60-year-old expressions, with additional guest expressions that host extreme age statements. Limited quantities of The Macallan 71 Years Old, The Macallan 74 Years Old and The Macallan 78 Years Old have been added to the collection on sporadic occasions.
The color red is highly significant to the scotch distillery and is inextricably linked to its history. The last name of The Macallan’s founder, Alexander Reid, means “the red one.” According to the The Moodie Davitt Report, the word was originally associated with red hair.
In 1903, Roderick Kemp created The Macallan Choice Old Range and shipped those cases in a red print to distinguish them from the brand’s other whiskies. The Red Collection was created as an homage to the color.
The Macallan 77 Years Old was distilled in small copper stills, and the spirit was aged in oak casks that were handpicked from the distillery. The spirit was left to rest for 77 years, leaving a spirit influenced by the wood. The brand describes this extreme-age statement whisky as hosting aromas of antique oak, raisin, and dates. The palate offers generous flavors of baked custard with crystalized ginger, and the finish is long and tropical.
“The Macallan 77 Years Old is an incredible new high-aged guest expression for The Red Collection, which has been crafted from some of the world’s oldest and rarest casks. It is a peerless single malt whisky that has slowly matured over seven decades,” said The Macallan Master Whisky Maker Kirsteen Campbell.
An animated film and collection of illustrations created by Javi Aznarez have accompanied the release, and Aznarez is known for his work in Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch.”
The Scotch Whisky producer introduced a coffee-inspired expression in late May, and this release falls right on the heels of that limited-edition expression.
