Woman Faces 20-Month Driving Ban After ‘Downing 10 Shots of Gin’ and Crashing Car Into Ditch

A 35-year-old woman from Nottinghamshire, England, encountered a severe setback on March 6 when her Mercedes veered off the road and into a ditch after “downing ten shots of gin,” Worksop Guardian reported on Tuesday.
According to prosecutor Alexis Mercer, the incident occurred shortly before 9 p.m., prompting a concerned citizen to alert authorities.
Upon arrival, police administered a breathalyzer test, revealing the woman had 84 micrograms of alcohol in her breath — well above England’s legal limit of 35 micrograms per 100 milliliters of breath. Per the report, she admitted to consuming ten shots of gin while visiting her grandfather earlier that evening.
During her appearance at Mansfield Magistrates Court, her defense solicitor emphasized her remorse, lack of prior convictions and full admission of guilt. He attributed her lapse in judgment to a blend of work and familial stress, asserting that such behavior was uncharacteristic.
“She knows she shouldn’t have drunk,” he continued, per Worksop Guardian. “It will take her at least two hours to get to work on public transport.”
The court handed her a 20-month driving ban with the possibility of reducing the term by 25% following the completion of a rehabilitation course. Additionally, she was fined £369, along with a £148 surcharge and £85 in costs (about $760 in total).
“This is the first time and probably the last time you have been in court,” the presiding magistrate told the woman, according to the report. “We understand this will be a difficult period for you.”
