On Tuesday, Starward Australian Whisky announced the release of a stout cask-finished limited-release whisky expression. Many members of the Starward Whisky team are former brewers, and the brand claims this expression honors the two disciplines of craft brewing and distilling.

Starward Stout Cask hosts a 52% ABV and a suggested retail price of $100.

For the release, Starward sourced its barrels from Melbourne brewery Brick Lane. The barrels were used to brew the beer brand’s popular “Trilogy Of Fear” imperial stout series.

“We love the change of seasons at Starward, and the colder weather means it’s the perfect time for a stout!” exclaimed Starward Production Director, Sam Slaney in a news release from the brand. “Brick Lane’s amazing Trilogy of Fear series showcases complex dark malt and a rich texture, allowing our whisky to soak up all the robust flavor from these stout-soaked barrels. The limited release has been brewing for some time, and we couldn’t be happier with the result.”

The Starward Team hand-selected whisky that matured in the brand’s red wine and Apera barrels. Apera is a type of Australian sherry, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.

The blend was subsequently removed at cask strength and then spent an additional 18 months aging in Brick Lane’s stout-soaked barrels.

The brand describes the whisky as “rich, dark, and delicious,” and suggests pairing it with an imperial barrel-aged stout in a boilermaker for the ultimate decadent Fall drinking experience.

The whisky is available via the brand in limited quantities. Those interested in purchasing the expression can register starting October 9th at Stawrard’s website, and a ballot drawing will be held on October 31st, just in time for Halloween.

After the initial drawing, the whisky will be available on Drizzly.

In September, Starward leaped into the RTD space with two pre-made cocktails including the (NEW) Old Fashioned and the brand’s own riff on a Whisky Negroni.
