TX Experimental Series No. 16 Texas Straight Rye Whiskey Full Proof is a limited-edition rye whiskey produced by Firestone & Robertson Distilling Co. in Fort Worth, Texas. Made with a 100% rye mash bill using local grains from Sawyer Farms, the whiskey is matured for seven years in the Texas climate and bottled at full proof. It is bottled at 60% ABV and released in a limited run of 1,100 375 ml bottles available exclusively at the distillery’s visitor center. According to the producer, the whiskey reflects concentrated oak and spice character shaped by Texas temperature extremes and extended aging.

  • Nose:

Brash nose full of herbaceous rye character: dill, chili pepper, clove, nutmeg, pine. Some sweet notes hover in the background: brown sugar and cola. The sweetness picks up with molasses and a caramel note with some air.

  • Taste:

Oily viscosity with some heat. This is a big, flavorful and very good rye whiskey. Big cracked pepper, dill, clove and sassafras, as well as a big leather note with a moderate amount of tannin.

  • Finish:

The finish is medium in length. It kicks off with intense spice: nutmeg, cinnamon, and that chili powder from the nose returns. From there it gives a dose of syrupy cherry cola and a bit of dill and a pepper note that’s more akin to jalapeño

  • Overall:

A very good, spicy rye. 7 years is a long time in Texas, but this doesn’t taste over-oaked to me — certainly there’s a bit of tannin in there, but it’s far from overwhelming. A very strong release from TX that’s packed with concentrated flavor and well-aged. This brash rye whiskey has me excited for the future of this young distillery.
