  • Cognac, well-aged in mostly worn casks where you get a great maturation vessel without much wood influence. Incredibly deep, cooked down fruit, grapes and stone fruits.

  • This is a groundbreaking and exciting experiment, and I’m happy to report that the whiskey is excellent. I can’t even begin to imagine how much work went into blending this — kudos, Lost Lantern.

  • Nose:

The nose is dense, buttery, confectionary and complex. There’s a big caramel fudge note, alongside waffle cone, cornbread, brûléed brown sugar, oatmeal raisin cookies and cream cheese frosting.

  • Taste:

The mouthfeel is moderate, coating the palate nicely. It drinks fairly hot. Flavorwise, there’s loads going on. I first pick up a nice creamy caramel note, quickly followed by a grainy character that reads somewhere between rye and wheat. There’s also a minerality at play, plus more of that oatmeal raisin cookies note from the nose. There’s quite a bit of spice here as well — cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg, mostly, and a bit of clove — plus banana bread, chestnut, plum, brandied cherries, a pronounced almond note, leather and a sprig of mint.

  • Finish:

The finish is toasty and dark, opening with cracked pepper, banana walnut muffins and tobacco and then segueing into a dark-fruit profile of cherry, raisin and plum. It peters out from there, leaving you with dark fruit, leather and a bit of spice.

  • Overall:

A good and very complex bourbon that will have you trying to pull different flavor notes out for as long as you enjoy it. This is a groundbreaking and exciting experiment, and I’m happy to report that the whiskey is excellent. I can’t even begin to imagine how much work went into blending this — kudos, Lost Lantern.
