Gouden Carolus Single Malt is a Belgian single malt whisky produced at Stokerij De Molenberg in Blaasveld by Het Anker, a brewery founded in Mechelen in 1471. It is pot-distilled from 100% malted barley using the mash of the Gouden Carolus Tripel beer, then aged first in first-fill bourbon casks and finished in custom Het Anker oak casks. It carries no age statement, is non-chill filtered with no added color and is bottled at 46% ABV for around $60.
Grassy and honeyed aromas again coming through... on the palate, the heavy malt component, almost approaching burnt caramel at times, evokes the notes of the beer-heavy mash.
It's got light flavors, still sweet and light almost exactly as it smells. On the front, light grapefruit flavors pick up into lemongrass, followed by the bitterness of orange peels and leather, anise and copper.
