Penderyn Sherrywood is a single malt Welsh whisky produced at the Penderyn Distillery on the foothills of the Brecon Beacons National Park in Wales by The Welsh Whisky Company. It is made from 100% malted barley and combines spirit matured in ex-Buffalo Trace bourbon casks with spirit matured in ex-Oloroso sherry casks, then blended to profile and bottled at 46% ABV without chill filtration or added coloring. It carries no age statement but is approximately 6 years old and retails for around $70.

  • This is a very fruit forward whiskey that I'm not sure benefits from the peating nor the cask treatment. It's almost reminiscent of Tobala mezcales in its combination of very ripe tropical fruit, saline and smoke.

  • There is a bit too much alcoholic bite for my liking but it is a young whisky. It’s less sweet than the Madeira cask, more bittersweet with a rich flavour of honey and some fruit (apples and peaches). The finish is a modest affair, long but the flavours are a bit muted, bittersweet and touch fruity.

  • Fresh aromas of crunchy green fruit and sweet meadow grass lead to a vibrant palate of gooseberry, nutmeg, smooth vanilla, and an elegant, lingering pinch of warming spice.
