Richard Seale

Master Distiller & Blender at
R. L. Seal and Foursqure Distillery in Barbados

1) Bucket List items for this year.

  1. More special editions to be released
  2. More special editions to be laid down !
  3. To teach the world of pure single rum.
  4. Set up our own dechar / rechar operation for barrels.

2) Biggest achievement you personally feel you have accomplished for the rum industry.

Raised consciousness of the need for integrity in the category. The cat is out of the bag!

3) Favorite Drink + Recipe

Simple. Rum with Ginger ale or rum with a splash of Velvet Falernum or just rum.

4) Where do you see the rum industry today?

At the crossroads. Will it become a great spirit of real value like whisky and cognac or a spirit with style over substance and only perceived value like vodka?.

5) Where do you see the rum industry in 5 years?

Hopefully on the right road.

6) Share some (2-3) of your mentors and how they have helped you.

My father – People are often in awe when they visit Foursquare, its a standard they don’t expect, he set the standard.
Dave Broom – A whisky advocate who became a believer in rum. If he could so I realised, must I.
Neil Mathieson – Neil heads up our European/UK importers. He is a purist with utter contempt for anything less. Clearly we needed to find each other.
Luca Gargano – His enthusiasm for rum is joyous. He came to me to speak the gospel of pure single rum and I had an epiphany.
