Tom Holland Made His New Non-Alcoholic Shandy Lineup for Zendaya

“Spider-Man” star Tom Holland is back in the headlines with a quartet of shandy flavors released through his non-alcoholic beer brand, BERO.

On Monday (which, incidentally, happens to be Holland’s 30th birthday), the brand unveiled a lineup of zero-proof shandies in Lemon Lime, Pink Grapefruit, Elderflower and Blackberry Yuzu varieties. While a standard shandy typically uses a 50/50 mix of lemonade and beer, BERO has opted for a 70/30 ratio that leans harder into the fruit side of the equation. All make use of the brand’s Kingston Golden Pils, our second favorite in the BERO lineup behind its exemplary Noon Wheat.

According to Holland, the limited-edition release was imagined as something more than a tribute to British shandy culture. The actor-turned-entrepreneur says that he was inspired by his wife, Zendaya, who acted as an unofficial muse for the four new flavors.

“To be honest, I created the BERO Shandy for Z. She’s never been a beer drinker, so I wanted to bring something new to the table that she could enjoy,” Holland said in a news release. “I’ve always loved shandies, so exploring that style with BERO felt like the perfect next step.”

So what might fans expect when the shandies roll out nationwide on June 8?

The brand kindly sent us a preview of the upcoming release, packaged in slender, 12-ounce cans that feel more hard seltzer than beer. Having reviewed the brand’s flagship trio of NA beers (great stuff!) and its one-off Coffee Draught created in collaboration with Robert Downey Jr. (odd but totally enjoyable), we went in with high hopes.

BERO Shandy Review

Daybreak Shandy

Kicking off the collection is the brand’s Lemon-Lime shandy. Poured into a glass, it fizzes up with a picture-perfect creamy beer head that tastes exactly like a lemon creamsicle. Yum! None-too-sweet hints of lemon, lime and vanilla dominate the flavor profile here, paired with a nice undercurrent of maltiness from the Golden Pils. What it lacks in sourness, it makes up for in sessionability.

Golden Hour Shandy

Schöfferhofer is by far the world’s most famous grapefruit shandy, and BERO’s NA twist on the concept wisely sticks to those basics. Which is to say: If you don’t enjoy the tart, bittersweet bite of fresh grapefruit juice, there’s still plenty to like here. Mellow flavors of grapefruit and peach shine alongside a recognizable punch of malt breadiness (think crackers and lightly sweetened honey biscuits). Toss this one in the fridge and enjoy it all day long.

Sunset Shandy

Elderflower liqueur is firmly in the zeitgeist at bars across the country, as are Lychee Martinis. The Sunset Shandy feels like a pointed riff on both. The can cracks open with immediately recognizable flavors of white grape, lavender and lychee gummy candies (brand name Kasugai, if you feel like getting specific). Though there’s pretty much no malt flavor to be found, this turned out to be my favorite of the bunch. Tastes like a fun fruit soda you might find on the shelf at a Japanese grocery store.

Midnight Shandy

Once again, the Japanese soda influence is strong — though I can’t say that blackberry or yuzu are the first flavors that come to mind. Instead, there’s a buoyant, almost chewy hint of grape jelly, alongside a sweet and creamy note reminiscent of Melona Honeydew Melon popsicles. The combo is a little befuddling, especially since the malt undercurrent is all but lost at this point. If you remove the shandy expectations, however, it’s pretty tasty stuff, and feels very much in tune with everything that the Sunset flavor had in mind.
