Procera Gin, based in Nairobi, Kenya, announced on Wednesday the release of its latest creation: Procera Green Dot 2023 Vintage. According to a press release, the gin offers a unique expression of African terroir, made exclusively from the berries, foliage and wood of a single juniper tree harvested in Narok County.

Only 2,023 bottles of this limited-edition gin will be available worldwide, with just 672 bottles slated for U.S. release.

Distinguishing itself from gins made with dried berries, Procera Gin is crafted from fresh equatorial juniper berries from the Juniperus Procera tree, which grows wild in the highlands of Kenya at altitudes above 2,200 meters. Procera affirms that the slow ripening process at high altitudes imbues the berries with a distinctive nutty and savory characteristic.

The Green Dot 2023 Vintage is distilled using a Muller 230L Aromat pot still by Master Distiller Roger Jorgensen, employing a unique process. Instead of cooking the botanicals at high temperatures during distillation, the botanicals are steeped in the base spirit at a warm maceration temperature of 104°F to extract essential oils and fresh flavors without overcooking them.

“Dried berries may be fine for other gins, but we are driven by a love of freshness and a respect for the complex flavors that only the ripest berries can provide,” said Co-Founder Guy Brennan in the press release. “The use of fresh juniper turns Procera into a terroir spirit.”

The gin is described as having an earthy, woody nose with subtle pine forest notes and intense green juniper aromas. According to its producer, it also offers flavors of buttery juniper, vegetal herbs, stone fruit, earthy, umami notes and a coconut finish.

“The 2023 Vintage of Green Dot is crafted from a single tree to create distinctive and balanced notes with a creamy and buttery palate,” Brennan added.

“This is undoubtedly the best gin we’ve ever created.”

Each bottle of Procera Green Dot 2023 Vintage is individually numbered and presented in a hand-blown bottle crafted from 100% recycled glass with a Juniperus Procera wood stopper, enclosed in a hand-carved Kenyan coconut wood box with natural sisal fiber.

Nose: Earthy, delicate and woody in style with subtle notes of pine forest combined with deep, intense, core aromas of green juniper.

Palate: Complex yet understated at first; initial flavors of buttery, rich juniper, vegetal herbs and stone fruit are revealed on a layered and mouth-filling journey. This is followed by earthy, green, and umami notes with a gorgeous coconut lift towards the finish, which lingers and evolves for several minutes on a harmonious and savory palate.

The suggested serve for Procera Green Dot 2023 Vintage is a Classic Dry Martini, which is said to highlight the purity of the African juniper. The recipe includes rinsing a chilled martini glass with premium dry vermouth and pouring in a two-ounce measure of frozen gin. The drink is finished by expressing lemon zest over the cocktail, brushing it around the rim, and adding it to the glass.

Procera Green Dot 2023 Vintage is bottled at 47% ABV and has a suggested retail price of $179.00. In the U.S., it will be available for pre-orders starting April 1. Procera’s other expressions can be found for purchase at select retailers in New York, Georgia and Massachusetts, as well as online.
