Michter’s has done it again. The esteemed Kentucky bourbon brand has been named Drinks International’s “The World’s Most Admired Whiskey” for the second year in a row. The distillery first achieved the No. 1 spot on the list last year, beating out brands like Yamazaki and Ardbeg.
It was a historic moment for American whiskey, as Michter’s became the first brand from the U.S. to achieve that recognition.
“Our entire team is thrilled by this great honor,” Michter’s President Joseph J. Magliocco said in a news release. “We are deeply humbled and so very grateful to all our friends and supporters around the world.”
Michter’s’ main distillery — Fort Nelson — is in the Shively neighborhood in Louisville, Kentucky, but it also has two other properties in Kentucky: a farming property that grows grain on 205 acres in Springfield and a second distillery near Fort Nelson.
“We do everything we can at Michter’s to focus on quality, but this never would have happened without the phenomenal support that we have received from our trade partners and from our loyal supporters,” said Michter’s Master Distiller Dan McKee in a statement. “We are so grateful to the Academy and to everyone who has made all this possible.”
Michter’s has an eclectic portfolio, which includes its core US*1 collection. Within the US*1 range, the brand boasts a bourbon, rye, American whiskey and a sour mash whiskey. The brand’s stable of expressions also encompasses a barrel strength line, as well as 10-year, 20-year, 25-year, toasted barrel and sour mash expressions. Michter’s Celebration Sour Mash is its ultra-premium whiskey, and the average price for the expression rivals Van Winkle whiskeys, typically ranging at around $20,000.

“Over the past decade I’ve seen the reputation of Michter’s surge among the trade,” Drinks International Editor Shay Waterworth said. “Matt Magliocco and his team have worked tirelessly to engage with the global bar trade and its maturation program is one of the most impressive I’ve come across. It’s no surprise to see Michter’s retain the top spot in The World’s Most Admired Whiskies.”
