Redwood Empire Kicks Off New ‘Small Lot’ Series With 2 Whiskeys, Including the California Distillery’s 1st Single Malt

Redwood Empire, the California-based whiskey brand, has introduced a new whiskey collection, The Small Lot Series, the brand told Whiskey Raiders this week.

“Our small lot series allows us to continue our spirit of experimentation by applying our hard-won house style to products with a specific focus,” Redwood Empire said.

The Small Lot Series debuts with two expressions: a bourbon and the brand’s first single malt whiskey. Here’s what we know about the new whiskeys:

Redwood Empire Foggy Burl Single Malt Whiskey

Redwood Empire

The first single malt whiskey to come from Redwood Empire, Foggy Burl is a blend of 27 barrels with 27 unique malt mashbills, according to the distillery, which said it has been “quietly laying down a barrel of single malt each quarter” for the past seven years.

Redwood Empire Foggy Burl has a suggested retail price of $99.99.

“Being a brewer before a distiller, I have an appreciation for the large variety of malts available and love to rotate in different types for all our recipes,” Redwood Empire Master Distiller Jeff Duckhorn said.

Distilled from 100% malted barley and aged in toasted and Char 3 barrels, this whiskey is bottled at 47% ABV. Like all of Redwood Empire’s whiskeys, Foggy Burl is named for a tree. The Foggy Burl tree stands an incredible 347 feet tall and collects 40% of its water each year from fog.

Tasting notes, via the brand: “Lighter malts bring traditional single malt notes and the inclusion of some fun darker chocolate and caramel malts provide a rich, robust palate.

Redwood Empire Devils Tower High Rye Bourbon Whiskey

Redwood Empire

Distilled from a mashbill of 51% corn, 41% rye, 2% wheat and 2% malted barley, Devils Tower is blended from 25 toasted and Char 3 barrels and bottled at 99 proof.

Redwood Empire Devils Tower has a suggested retail price of $79.99.

Devils Tower is a 340-foot-high tree named for the monument in Wyoming.

Tasting notes, via the brand: “The perfect blend of spicy and sweet, this bourbon is as versatile as it is complex. Celebrating the robust flavor of rye while maintaining viscosity and mouthfeel of corn.”

In May, Redwood Empire announced a second release of its cask-strength with increased volume after describing the first launch as an “overwhelming success.”
