Bruichladdich Revives Cult-Favorite Yellow Submarine for Distillery’s 25th Anniversary

Bruichladdich announced Monday that it is bringing back one of the most recognizable releases from its modern history with the launch of Yellow Submarine III, a limited-edition single malt created to mark the Islay distillery’s 25th anniversary since its revival in 2001.
The new release is the latest chapter in the distillery’s tongue-in-cheek Yellow Submarine series, which traces its roots to an unusual episode in Bruichladdich’s early years. In the early 2000s, U.S. Military Intelligence mistakenly flagged the distillery as a potential site for weapons of mass destruction. Rather than bristle at the bureaucratic error, Bruichladdich responded with humor, launching its original Whisky of Mass Distinction: Yellow Submarine bottling in 2005.
The latest expression follows the original 2005 release and 2018’s Yellow Submarine II: The Legend Resurfaces.
The whisky also references another piece of Bruichladdich lore: a Ministry of Defence submarine that ran aground off the coast of Islay in 2005. A replica of the bright yellow sub remains on display at the distillery.
“Bringing Yellow Submarine back for our 25th anniversary is about honoring that spirit,” Gareth Brown, global marketing director at Bruichladdich Distillery, said in a news release. “It’s a reminder that great whisky can be refined in the glass, but it doesn’t have to take itself too seriously.”
Yellow Submarine III is a 14-year-old unpeated single malt distilled from 100% Scottish barley and matured entirely on Islay. The whisky was aged in a combination of 75% first-fill bourbon barrels and 25% first- and second-fill French red wine casks, a recipe inspired by the original 2005 bottling.
Bottled at 54.2% ABV, the whisky is non-chill filtered and contains no added color.
According to Master Blender Adam Hannett, the bourbon casks contribute notes of vanilla, honeyed sweetness and texture, while the French wine casks add layers of fruit, spice and structure.
On the nose, the whisky offers aromas of honeyed oats, buttery shortbread, toasted hazelnuts and praline, alongside nutmeg, pink peppercorn and ginger spice. The palate features orange zest, honeysuckle, apple, pear and crème brûlée, with a touch of sea salt reflecting its Islay origins. The finish is long and warming, with lingering honeyed sweetness, toasted hazelnuts and gentle spice.
“Bruichladdich Yellow Submarine III is one of those whiskies that makes you smile as soon as you nose it,” Hannett said. “It’s playful, layered, and moreish, exactly what a Yellow Submarine whisky should be.”
Yellow Submarine III is priced at $134.99 and will be available beginning June 1 through Bruichladdich’s U.S. website and select specialist whisky retailers nationwide.
The release is the second limited-edition bottling unveiled as part of Bruichladdich’s 25th anniversary celebrations.
