Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis received two bottles of Canadian whisky (well, technically, one wasn’t whisky, but more on that later) from Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, he shared Monday. He earned the bottles thanks to a bet he struck with Smith over the result of the Stanley Cup.
The bet was that she would send him Canadian whisky if the Florida Panthers won, but if the Edmonton Oilers won, he’d have to send her Florida rum.
The Panthers wound up prevailing, winning the series 4-3 despite nearly blowing a 3-0 series lead.
The Florida Governor posted about the team’s victory — and his whisky win — on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“Thank you, @ABCDanielleSmith, for sending us Canadian [whisky] in honor of our Stanley Cup Champions, the Florida Panthers,” DeSantis wrote. “Florida may be the most tropical state in the United States, yet we have held the Stanley Cup for 3 of the last 5 Years between the Lightning and Panthers. Florida has become a hockey state! Cheers to conservative leadership in the U.S.A. and Canada!”
The Florida governor noted the Canadian whiskies looked “really really good” and shared that they would be served during functions at the Governor’s mansion.
Hockey fans expressed their enthusiasm in the comments section.
“We are multi faceted here in the Sunshine State!” an individual commented.
Others praised the “good sportsmanship” between both governors and the hockey teams.
During the game, the Oilers apparently bounced back from 3-0, with the Panthers leading in Game 7, but the Panthers ultimately won.
News about the bet broke out in June, when Smith initially challenged DeSantis via Twitter. Smith floated the idea that each elected official bet their spirit of choice depending on the outcome of the finals.
DeSantis Canadian Premier some Florida rum, should the Oilers win. DeSantis apparently even offered to gift a key lime pie to Smith if Canada should win the “friendly wager.”
Which Whiskies Did Ron DeSantis Win in the Bet?
Based on the video, DeSantis appears to have won bottles of Stampede Canadian Rye Whisky and Sweet Sippin Canadian Maple Whisky.
Stampede Canadian Rye Whisky
Stampede Canadian Rye Whisky is bottled at 40% ABV and is made at Eau Claire Distillery. The whisky is described by the brand as “the spirit of the Canadian West” and honors the country’s Western heritage.
It hosts a suggested retail price of $39.99 per 750-milliliter bottle and is described as having a nose with baking spices and apricots. The palate possesses chocolate aromas, coupled with vanilla and spice, according to the brand.
Sweet Sippin Canadian Maple Whisky Liqueur
Sweet Sippin Canadian Maple Whisky takes Canadian rye and blends it together with maple syrup. Since it contains less than 40% ABV and is mixed with maple syrup, this one isn’t technically a whisky, but instead a flavored whisky liqueur, which hosts a suggested retail price of $33.99. Sweet Sippin hosts an ABV of 22% and has plenty of maple syrup qualities, flavor-wise.
Sweet Sippin is made by Highwood Distillers, an Alberta brand with a history that dates back to 1974. The brand claims Sweet Sippin is pot distilled and made with pure Quebec maple syrup and water from the Rocky Mountains.
