On Wednesday, Penelope Bourbon announced the 2024 release of its annual Penelope Valencia, a bourbon finished in casks that previously contained Vino de naranja, an orange wine from Sevilla, Spain.

“We’re constantly evolving and tweaking our processes with the goal of making our products better year over year,” Penelope Bourbon co-founder Michael Paladini said in a news release. “This year’s Valencia is a great example of that commitment, and we’re excited to share it for fans to enjoy.”

Vino de naranja is produced by macerating the fragrant peels of Seville oranges in white wine. Seville oranges can’t be eaten raw due to their sour, bitter flavor, but their aroma and flavor are used in marmalade, juices and vino de naranja.

“These are some of my favorite wine barrels to work with,” Penelope Bourbon co-founder and Master Blender Daniel Polise said. “The producer we partnered with from southern Spain creates exceptional orange wine, and this year’s release has fantastic, rich orange and citrus notes that really stand out from last year’s tangerine notes.”

Penelope Valencia is distilled from a mashbill of 74% corn, 16% wheat, 7% rye and 3% malted barley and finished for up to a year in VDN casks.

Penelope Valencia is bottled at 95 proof and comes with a minimum suggested retail price of $79.99 per 750-milliliter bottle.

A limited allocation of 5,000 cases are available.

Penelope Valencia made Bottle Raiders’ list of the best 10 bourbons under $100 in 2022.
