  • I honestly thought this was pretty tasty, even for being a generic bottling and at only 100 proof. Lots of sweet citrus balanced with the savory spices of the rye.

  • The finish lingers with allspice and cardamom. Fairly easy-drinking for a 100-proof rye whiskey.

  • I know many people love this, but I find this style a little too simple and a little flat when diluted. Doesn’t swim too well. But the obligatorily-retro packaging is very lovely!

  • Bold, spicy, nutty toffee, butterscotch finish. Very distinctive, and probably a polarizing whiskey.

  • Nicely balanced, the elements are all in harmony here, though that spice — coupled with the kick of extra alcohol — is always at the forefront. The finish offers notes of coal, reminding you this is not a vanilla-scented Bourbon but rather a rye.

  • Medium-long, its a complex blend of spicy and sweet with the brown sugar/molasses and rye spice playing nicely off each other.

  • Nose:

Rye spice, caramel and butterscotch. Its woody, I get some pine and some oak notes with a very faint metallic note. I seem to pick this note up in a lot of ryes, but its a good metallic note, not a bad one.

  • Taste:

Sweet funky rye spice. Its hot, but has a nice thick, oily mouthfeel. Mild plastic notes but soon replaced by cinnamon, molasses and one more good rye spice kick.

  • Finish:

Medium-long, its a complex blend of spicy and sweet with the brown sugar/molasses and rye spice playing nicely off each other.

  • Overall:

I'm a sucker for SAOS rye but this was a really great change of pace. Delicious, and generally high quality. Their single barrel, cask strength store picks are a whole other level though, and I cant suggest this over one of those, when taking price into consideration.
