Distilled under the oversight of the legendary Ana Maria Romero Mena, Volcan X.A is a blend of reposado tequila with añejo and extra añejo reserves. All of the liquor was aged in proprietary Grace oak casks, exact details for which are a little hard to come by online. The tequila was extracted via a combination of tahona and roller mill and fermented with Champagne yeast. Last but not least, the bottle is complete with — drumroll please — a toggleable light switch that illuminates the inside! This is LVMH's flagship tequila offering and it absolutely shows.

  • Quite sweet on the palate, but not uncompromising. Those fresh fruit notes from the nose get traded for dried apricots, raisins, plum, vanilla and white pepper.

  • Without tasting the three component tequilas in this blend it’s hard to say where things might have gone amiss, but as it stands, $180 is a lot to ask for a rather unfocused offering.

  • Nose:

Comes out the gate kicking with a nice tightrope of pepper and fruit. Fresh-sliced apple and cherries, orange, nutmeg and allspice. Smells like early autumn in a glass.

  • Taste:

Quite sweet on the palate, but not uncompromising. Those fresh fruit notes from the nose get traded for dried apricots, raisins, plum, vanilla and white pepper.

  • Finish:

Oak starts throwing its weight around, bringing in barrel spice and caramel for a mostly sweet finish. There's a smidge of bitterness halfway between anise and orange pith that rounds things out.

  • Overall:

A fun, accessible tequila in an eminently club-friendly bottle. The decision to blend various age statements was a great choice, adding a unique character that falls nicely between reposado and añejo without veering into over oaked territory. Anyone who grabs this off the shelf thinking it'll be Clase Azul or 1942 will be pleasantly surprised by the results.
