Released in December 2024, this is the first "cigar blend" whiskey from the Austin, Texas-based distillery, Still Austin. It was blended by master blender Nancy Fraley, who is well known for really bringing "cigar blends" — spirits crafted to be paired with cigars — to America. With a suggested retail price of $149, Still Austin Tanager is a blend of bourbons made from red, white and blue corn (plus rye and barley). Still Austin says that this whiskey was made with the Petites Eaux blending method, which is French for "Small Waters." This technique, often used for cognac and armagnac, ages a mix of spirit and water to 25% ABV for one year and then blends it into the base spirit.

  • months. This whiskey is worth seeking out even if you are not a cigar fan, but if you are looking to spend a little less money to get to know this craft distillery I’d recommend sticking with the bourbon or rye in the core lineup instead.

  • Nose:

Sweet, rich, floral nose with undercurrents of dried fruit. A huge, delightful vanilla bean note is backed up by buttercream, cinnamon, plum, cherry pits, dried strawberries, potpourri, clove, brown sugar and tobacco.

  • Taste:

This is delicious. Spectacular viscosity on the palate, which delivers gentle heat and a rich, complex flavor profile. Butterscotch, browned butter, caramel apple, cinnamon, almond, sassafras, clove, gingerbread. The primary part of the palate is big, bold, sweet, bright and rich, and toward the back of the tongue it takes on a much spicier profile with allspice, cinnamon and ginger.

  • Finish:

Long finish with cherry, anise, frosting, light peppermint, tannin, tobacco, cinnamon, clove, pink peppercorn and a bit of heat.

  • Overall:

This is an incredible, rich, layered and nuanced bourbon. It's the best whiskey I've had from Still Austin — and the state of Texas.

  • Score:

    94
