  • The best Rio yet. It will appeal less to Amburana fanatics and more to folks who prioritize a balanced pour over a powerful one: a very good characteristic for Rio.

  • The mid-palate could be a bit more dynamic, but the finishing barrels are fun to experience with an American bourbon.

  • Nose:

Heavy baking spice, honey, toffee, potpourri, ginger, cracked pepper, pungent brown sugar and heavy icing.

  • Taste:

Sweet on the palate. More honey than Amburana here, which is a very good choice — Amburana can take over so easily, but the honey balances, and there’s enough oak and spice to keep those exotic flavors at bay: toffee, sweet honey, spicy pepper, lovely ginger and loads of clove.

  • Finish:

Heavy finish, long and powerful: maple, pepper, more aromatic spices and ginger, tobacco and cream.

  • Overall:

The best Rio yet. It will appeal less to Amburana fanatics and more to folks who prioritize a balanced pour over a powerful: a very good characteristic for Rio.

  • Score:

    88
