  • Knob Creek Bourbon x Rye is…quite good! It accomplishes some lovely flavor gymnastics balancing between rye spice and bourbon’s sweetness.

  • It’s one of the strangest whiskeys I’ve encountered in recent memory, as it doesn’t come across anything like the sum of its parts. I don’t particularly like it, though it has moments where it shines, and it’d be fine in a tall mixed drink.

  • Overall it’s lush and with big fruit flavors, jammy thickness, good balance, and richness on the finish.

  • Here’s the thing: There’s nothing objectively wrong with any of this. You can’t point at Knob Creek Bourbon x Rye bottle and say that it hasn’t been made with quality components. But at the same time, it seems a little incongruous to me, and I think that I might find either the bourbon or the rye more satisfying presented on its own.

  • Knob Creek Bourbon x Rye is an easy drinking, accessible blend of bourbon and rye whiskeys that leans more heavily into the rye side of the flavor spectrum.

  • Although this Knob Creek hybrid is not actually superior to either of its constituent expressions, it comes out quite different and equal in quality to either.

  • It’s also nice to see a line extension that isn’t another barrel finish. Instead, this is a creative way of using the whiskey that’s already in the lineup to create something entirely new (and very tasty) through blending and changing the proof.

  • Nose:

Big and creamy on the nose, tons of rich, brown sugar sweetness, toffee. There’s a good deal of praline, pepper, orange peel, rich espresso, toffee and butterscotch. Pleasant oak. Lovely nose.

  • Taste:

Moderate mouthfeel, honey, butterscotch, brown sugar and biiiiiig biiig pepper. Clove, candied ginger, lovely oak and tons of caramel. It’s sweet up front, big and spicy on the mid palate and the oak and maple drive hard on the back palate. Complex, loaded with spice and cinnamon. Wild, unique, surprising.

  • Finish:

Long finish, loaded with spice, sweet oak, maple, toffee, strong tannin and cinnamon, ginger and cracked pepper.

  • Overall:

I had a lot of guesses going in as to what I thought this was going to be like, and truthfully it zigged every time I expected a zag. It’s bold, rich, sweet, spicy, rich and peppy. There’s nothing like it out on the market and this blows the socks off any bourye on the shelf today.
