Released in October 2025, this is the latest edition in Jack Daniel's' Barrel Special Release annual series of limited whiskeys. Tanyard Hill Rye is a barrel-proof Tennessee Rye Whiskey matured in one of the oldest barrelhouses at the Jack Daniel Distillery, atop Tanyard Hill. As it's a single-barrel product, each barrel varies in proof. This one we're reviewing clocks in at 145.9. A highly sought-after product, this rye has a suggested retail price of $79.99 but is already re-selling online for between $800 and $1,300.

The nose is dark, powerful and concentrated yet complex, with notes of cinnamon, wood shavings, custard, caramel, clove, black cherry, semisweet chocolate and espresso. After a little time in the glass, some softer aromas emerge: butterscotch, a big berry profile (raspberries) and Cinnamon Toast Crunch (but like, the milk left over after you eat all the cereal).
Plenty of heat on the palate, plus lots of cinnamon, lots of sassafras, blackberry, gingerbread, cacao, buttercream frosting, espresso, tannin and apple peel.
Gorgeous long finish that opens with gingerbread and cinnamon, then transitions into bitter tannin, coffee grounds, cola, dark chocolate-covered almonds, a huge clove note and a touch of fig.
This is spectacular stuff. It's hazmat, and you can tell it's hazmat, but it's just beautiful, nuanced whiskey with a splendid balance of flavors. It's dark and rich and spicy yet has some lighter, sweeter, dessert-forward and fruity notes, as well. The result is a superbly balanced barrel-proof rye that's absolutely a contender for whiskey of the year.
