  • Nose:

The nose is dark, powerful and concentrated yet complex, with notes of cinnamon, wood shavings, custard, caramel, clove, black cherry, semisweet chocolate and espresso. After a little time in the glass, some softer aromas emerge: butterscotch, a big berry profile (raspberries) and Cinnamon Toast Crunch (but like, the milk left over after you eat all the cereal).

  • Taste:

Plenty of heat on the palate, plus lots of cinnamon, lots of sassafras, blackberry, gingerbread, cacao, buttercream frosting, espresso, tannin and apple peel.

  • Finish:

Gorgeous long finish that opens with gingerbread and cinnamon, then transitions into bitter tannin, coffee grounds, cola, dark chocolate-covered almonds, a huge clove note and a touch of fig.

  • Overall:

This is spectacular stuff. It's hazmat, and you can tell it's hazmat, but it's just beautiful, nuanced whiskey with a splendid balance of flavors. It's dark and rich and spicy yet has some lighter, sweeter, dessert-forward and fruity notes, as well. The result is a superbly balanced barrel-proof rye that's absolutely a contender for whiskey of the year.
