Distilled by Jack Daniel's, this is the first glimpse of the popular Tennessee producer's new line extension: Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Barrel Proof Rye. Jack experimented with a release of rye in its 2021 Heritage Collection of annual limited releases, and the reception was nothing short of critic applause. Several years later, we're seeing the rye added to the Jack Daniel's evergreen lineup of whiskeys designed to be available nationwide. Let's dive in!

  • This is awesome stuff, but it's also brash and powerful. It's no surprise it's already becoming an enthusiast favorite despite its very recent release.

  • Given how much vapor my pour was kicking up from about two yards away as I let it take in some air, I’m really left wondering how things would have been if I’d given it a try without the generous helping of water…

  • The high proof point is exciting and makes for an exceptionally bold pour, which I enjoy, but it’s a bit hotter than the 2020 limited edition barrel I reviewed by comparison.

  • Nose:

Unbelievably rich, full of maple, brown butter, barrel char, plenty of tannin, rye spice and an unusual cherry note I’m into — and surprised to find in Jack Daniel's

  • Taste:

Viscous on the palate. Rich, complex and layered. It’s hot — as these barrel proof Jack Daniel's often are — but so rich and full of flavor. Cherry, banana, orange peel all combine with tobacco, barrel char and tons of maple.

  • Finish:

Long, fiery but packed with flavor. Maple, rye spice and orange peel with tons of caramel richness and candied ginger.

  • Overall:

Jack Daniel's has really developed an eye for the barrel proof in recent years, first by straightening out its single barrel bourbon releases, then expanding the program and most recently this move into rye. This is awesome stuff, but it's also brash and powerful. It's no surprise it's already becoming an enthusiast favorite despite its very recent release.
