Grand Traverse Distillery Ole George Rye Whiskey Finished in Maple Syrup Barrels is made from 100% rye grain at the Michigan distillery. The whiskey ages for 4 years in new American white oak barrels, then finishes for an additional five years in barrels that previously held maple syrup. The maple barrel finish adds hints of sweetness that temper the spice and pepper notes typical of rye whiskey.
First taste was big spice right in your face. ItÂ’s rich and has that long finish. Compared to the straight rye, this has accentuated notes of brown sugar or perhaps graham cracker and orange marmalade.
