Frey Ranch Straight Rye Whiskey

  • Distiller

    Frey Ranch

  • Bottler

    Frey Ranch

  • ABV

    50%

  • Age

    5 Years

  • Price $60 to $99.99

Distilled by Frey Ranch, this grain to glass rye whiskey is bottled after at least five years of aging. That's a pretty strong start for a whiskey; just years ago so few producers could claim their own whiskey at 5 years old with any relative ease. This rye is produced with 100% of Frey Ranch's own Winter Cereal Rye. I'm pretty pumped about this one, so let's dive in.

  • The end result is perfectly credible as a rye, but it lacks the excitement and complexity of the more interesting Frey Ranch Bourbon.

  • A drink that transports you so easily is well worth the upper mid-range of price point ($59.99 give or take) that this hit. But if you are looking for a rye that is worth savoring, sharing, or hoarding, this is your next bottle to bring out to the skeptics that see American whiskey as too sweet, or lacking in character.

  • This is a monster rye, full of flavor. It's a really shocking showing for a 5-year-old rye. Blind, this could show up many other ryes, even those with an age advantage. This one's a winner, and I look forward to giving a Manhattan with this a go, as well.

  • Nose:

Intense nose that blends honey, candied ginger, big brown sugar, a pop of rye spice and some cracked pepper. The whiskey just jumps out from the glass, it's rich and reminds me of an amped-up Kentucky style rye despite the 100% rye in the mashbill.

  • Taste:

The palate is rich, viscous and layered, and the rye stomps on here. Big, bold rye spice blends with cola, caramel candies, rich vanilla bean and a rich tobacco and raisin character. Big rye spice pops in on the back of the palate as well, there's plenty of pleasant oak, plenty of structure here.

  • Finish:

Long finish. The finish tapers nicely, blending honey, sweet oak, a touch of ginger and caramel once more.

  • Overall:

This is a monster rye, full of flavor. It's a really shocking showing for a 5-year-old rye. Blind, this could show up many other ryes, even those with an age advantage. This one's a winner, and I look forward to giving a Manhattan with this a go, as well.
