  • Fincasa De La Tierra Rum Barrel Finish Rye strikes a good balance between its base rye whiskey and the rum barrel finish, bringing equal parts spice and sweetness to its sip.

  • As the whiskey transitions toward the finish, additional complexity shows up. Pencil shavings and the charred edge of toast crust appear first, before easing into hazelnut coffee creamer at the close. The ending reinforces the strengths of the palate rather than introducing anything jarring.

  • Nose:

Loads of rum character on the nose, which is fruity and light. Pineapple juice, blueberries, powdered sugar, butterscotch.

  • Taste:

Some youthful heat. Cinnamon and nutmeg mingle with key lime pie, coconut, blueberry again, white chocolate, macadamia.

  • Finish:

Enjoyable finish that delivers walnut, vanilla, clove, cinnamon and cocoa.

  • Overall:

It tastes a bit younger than I'd expect from the age but overall is a pretty pleasant pour that delivers a nice balance of flavors. The nose had me concerned it’d be a total rum bomb (and it’s certainly heavy on the rum), but the rye plays its part. This would be a great cocktail rye whose flavor profile could lend to some fun recipe experimentation.
