  • The latest Eagle Rare 17 is great bourbon. To me, it comes just a hair short of hitting last year’s complex highs, which is one of the toughest bars to clear in American whiskey.

  • A pleasant and classic sipper which acts its age, but it's surprisingly spicy for a bourbon.

  • Nose:

Bright and fruit-forward at first on the nose: blueberry, blackberry, plum, fig and toffee. It’s a combination of bright fruits and rich dessert.

  • Taste:

The palate is complex and drinks wonderfully at 101 proof — plenty of character without being a bruiser. Sweet fruits meet caramel, butterscotch, toffee, pleasant oak, a hint of nutmeg, baked apple and tobacco.

  • Finish:

The finish is long, layered and nuanced — really pleasant and shows how the flavors and tannin can come together without requiring crazy high proofs. Fig, cherry, blackberry, melon, apple and brown sugar all stew nicely and sit for a long finish.

  • Overall:

No doubt my favorite of this year's lineup, Eagle Rare 101 finally soars on the wings of complexity and balance in a form that’s easy for anyone to instantly love.

  • Score:
