Distilled by Driftless Glen in Baraboo, Wisconsin and matured for 4 years in a standard 53 gallon barrel, this release is also finished for more than 6 months in a Vino de Naranja barrel. VDN is a sweet, orange wine from Europe, similar to sherry wine, and it's becoming a hit in the US whiskey market - most notably with quite a few releases coming out of Starlight distillery in Indiana.

Sweet and woody, plenty of oak, wood chips, caramel, candied oranges, lemon, lime and a rich, rich custard note. There's no shortage of interesting things happening, and the wine is present but not aggressive.
Sweet on the palate, moderate viscosity with quite a bit of honey and date fruit. Orange peel, light citrus, bold oak and quite a bit of nougat persist, presenting a complex and interesting pour. Sweet, but not cloying, I notice the viscosity is a bit better handled here than some other VDN releases.
Long finish, oaky and dry, sweet and orange forward. Really well balanced, seeing the Naranja and the tannin work together, keeping this dram from becoming too dry, too bitter, too sweet or too syrupy.
Well done, driftless. A wonderful release that shows great competency in not letting the notoriously sweet VDN run out of control.
