Cutty Sark Prohibition Edition is a blended Scotch whisky produced by La Martiniquaise in Scotland. It is a small-batch blend of single malts and grain whiskies, with some components aged in American Sherry seasoned oak casks. It carries no age statement, is bottled at 50% ABV and sells for around $20-$25.
To be honest, this is not my favorite blend, or even my favorite expression of Cutty. The nose is thick, offering fuel oil notes, dense cereal, and some hospital character. The body is on the burly side — Prohibition-era drinkers had it rough, I suppose — though it speaks more of the bathtub than the frontier.
A beer-like effervescence and hoppiness surprises the palate, cutting the otherwise rich caramel and maple notes before winding into lingering touches of cigar smoke, toffee and black pepper.
