Crafthouse Cocktails is a Chicago-based brand founded by Charles Joy and Matt Lindner in 2013. Its ready-to-drink Mai Tai is made with Planteray rum, orange curacao, lime and almond orgeat and is canned at 16% ABV. The cocktail found its way onto our radar after winning Best Rum-Based RTD at the 2025 San Francisco World Spirits Competition (at which Crafthouse also won Best Vodka Soda and Best Vodka-Based).

  • It's immediately clear that this was made with a Caribbean rum. The Planteray adds a funky, tropical edge that punches far above its weight class, combining with tasty hits of orange, lime and perfectly unsaccharin orgeat.

  • The quartet of components all speak at about the right level — smoldering, slightly funky rum, orange and lime, and a pleasant burst of almond syrup.

  • This honey-hued drink is rum forward, with plenty of caramelized pineapple, and warms all the way down. There's no mistaking this for anything but a tropical drink.

  • Nose:

Plenty of lime, alcohol heat and a syrupy kick of orange from the curacao.

  • Taste:

Wow! It's immediately clear that this was made with a Caribbean rum. The Planteray adds a funky, tropical edge that punches far above its weight class, combining with tasty hits of orange, lime and perfectly unsaccharin orgeat. Hard to believe this has been sitting in a can for however many weeks or months since it was batched.

  • Finish:

The rum influence builds on the finish, adding flashes of bitter grapefruit, molasses and pineapple.

  • Overall:

Hands down the best rum ready-to-drink cocktail we've ever tried. Or, at the very least, the best that rum has ever tasted inside a ready-to-drink cocktail. This is the rare canned drink that fires on all cylinders, and a gold standard for everything else to come. Can't sing its praises enough.
