Caisteal Chamuis Heavily Peated is a no-age-statement blended malt Scotch whisky produced by Mossburn Distillers, drawing on single malts from Islay, Orkney and the Isle of Skye. The spirit is aged in refill and first-fill American oak hogsheads, then re-aged in virgin American oak barrels with oloroso sherry European oak heads, and finished in 200-liter first-fill bourbon barrels before being bottled non-chill-filtered at 46% ABV. It retails for around $43 and is positioned as an accessible entry into heavily peated Scotch.
The earthy peat smoke from the nose becomes more ashy on the palate. Creamy, saccharine sweet vanilla dances with brine, lemon-lime, charred oak, and faint notes of black pepper and heather.
