This is the 2026 edition of Bruichladdich's 18-year-old Port Charlotte single malt scotch whisky, the third annual release since the expression first debuted in February 2024. The Port Charlotte line has a reputation for producing extremely peaty whisky. The 2026 release is aged in an undisclosed mixture of first-fill bourbon, second-fill sherry, new oak and first-fill red wine casks, the latter coming from the Rhone Valley in France. This year's release is the first to use red wine casks in the aging process. It's bottled at 104.6 proof and has a suggested retail price of $199.99. The release is limited to 8,000 bottles worldwide, available at Bruichladdich’s online store and in limited quantities at retail.

  • Red wine casks can be difficult to tame, and Bruichladdich does a very strong job of balancing their influence alongside the usual peat-centric Port Charlotte profile to deliver an enjoyable and satisfying expression.

  • Overall, this is a really satisfying peated single malt, and one that might just convert the naysayers… although, let’s be honest, people tend to be pretty entrenched in their whisky opinions.

  • Nose:

Ashy, briny and peaty on the nose. That profile is accentuated by softer, sweeter notes: honey, waffle cone, melting butter, strawberries, tangerine.

  • Taste:

Moderate mouthfeel with notes of orange blossom, red grape peel and strawberry jam initially, followed by sea salt, browned butter and then a big influx of red wine character.

  • Finish:

The finish is long, leading with an earthy profile of mushroom and tobacco, followed by dry red wine character, walnut, a bit of pepper and a bit of minerality.

  • Overall:

A lovely scotch. Red wine casks can be difficult to tame, and Bruichladdich does a very strong job of balancing their influence alongside the usual peat-centric Port Charlotte profile to deliver an enjoyable and satisfying expression.
