Brugal 1888 is produced in the Dominican Republic. The rum undergoes a double aging process; first the rum is aged in ex-bourbon barrels before being transferred and further matured in ex-sherry barrels. The rum is bottled at 40% ABV. Let's dive in!
The Brugal 1888 succeeds on many levels, is a good sipping rum, and a worthwhile addition to any rum lover’s cabinet. I’d buy it again without hesitation, to drink when I’m not on top of the world, perhaps (I have the full-proof Demeraras for that), but certainly when I’m feeling a little more relaxed and at ease with the state of my life.
I will be much more inclined to sip this rum than to mix it, and when I do sip it, I will likely forego the ice such that I can more fully enjoy its rich dry flavour.

House Review
Nose:
Caramel and brown butter on the nose, salted caramel, toffee and a hint of oak and char.
Taste:
Medium on the palate, full of caramel once more. Savory blend of baking spice, toffee, a hint of banana and pepper. Pleasant cola note.
Finish:
Long finish, a surprising development at 40% but this carries nicely and is loaded once more with plenty of salted caramel, brown butter, some char and tobacco.
Overall:
Pleasant and easy to drink, Brugal makes an excellent entry to the category that’s easy to enjoy from a neat pour to the cocktail bar.
