Flavored whiskey remains one of the most commercially successful — and most criticized — segments of the American spirits market. Many bottles in the category rely on heavy sweetness and artificial flavoring, often obscuring the base spirit altogether. In response, some newer entrants have begun experimenting with a different approach: starting with mature whiskey and layering flavor on top of it rather than masking it.
That philosophy sits at the center of Big Easy Whiskey, the flagship release from New Orleans-based Big Easy Spirits Co. The bottle begins with a five-year straight whiskey distilled from a bourbon-style mashbill of 81% corn, 15% rye, and 4% malted barley. After maturation, the whiskey is infused with a proprietary blend of 24 botanicals, herbs, spices, and fruit designed to evoke the flavor profile of a classic Old Fashioned cocktail.
Bottled at 86 proof (43% ABV) and priced around $34.99 for a 750-milliliter bottle, Big Easy Whiskey aims to balance cocktail-inspired flavor with the underlying character of aged whiskey. According to the company, the natural infusions introduce notes such as vanilla, caramel, and fruit while allowing the base spirit to remain the focal point.
Big Easy Spirits Co. positions the whiskey as a nod to New Orleans’ deep cocktail heritage — a bottle meant to work in mixed drinks but also to be enjoyed simply over ice. The question, of course, is how well that concept translates once it’s poured into the glass.

Really interesting nose. Sweet vanilla intertwines with a very herbal profile: anise, rosemary, clove, sarsaparilla.
Sweet. Cinnamon, lots of sassafras, clove, vanilla, black tea.
The finish is drier than the palate, with cinnamon and nutmeg kicking things off, followed by anise, chicory and a bit of sweet red licorice.
A wild infused whiskey packed with baking spice. It’s a very interesting flavor profile that’s complex enough to keep you thinking sipping it on a rock and would be a fun one to mess around with in cocktails. It’ll no doubt be divisive with its out-there flavor profile, but I think it’s pretty enjoyable.
