  • The cask influence is unmistakable on the nose, which offers tropical melons, kiwis, guava, sweet vanilla, dill, and black pepper. Rye is in the spotlight on the well-textured and prickly palate, leading with dill pickles, deli brown mustard, rye toast, allspice, gingersnaps, cinnamon chewing gum, and dried citrus peels.

  • Sweet fructose and moderately tart fruit lead. Rye character builds with each sip, and by the second taste, allspice and baked clove are already accumulating on the midpalate. That sweetness gets pulled from fruit to blackstrap molasses, then once again toward very dark cherry and some leathery tannins.

  • A fantastic rye whiskey. It’s well-aged and spicy, and the rum casks add some welcome balancing sweetness without ever overwhelming. Kudos, Angel’s Envy. This is terrific stuff.

  • Nose:

Spice-forward nose with enough heat to keep you from coming in too deep. Nutmeg, chili powder, clove, fresh banana and caramel

  • Taste:

Flavor bomb on the palate. The viscosity is moderately mouth-coating with a good bit of drying tannin. Huge clove and nutmeg mingle with cinnamon, pine, butterscotch, coconut and candied orange.

  • Finish:

Uber-spicy finish with loads of ginger, nutmeg and cracked pepper leading into cinnamon, clove and anise. From there, it transitions into a dry, tannic, oak-forward finish with burnt marshmallow and singed orange peel. That’s where it leaves you — slightly dry-throated, ready to go back in for your next sip. A bit of rum funk slides in around the tannin — mango, pineapple.

  • Overall:

A fantastic rye whiskey. It’s well-aged and spicy, and the rum casks add some welcome balancing sweetness without ever overwhelming. Kudos, Angel’s Envy. This is terrific stuff.
