Travis Kelce defended his viral courtside beer chug at an NBA playoff game on the latest episode of his podcast, calling it a “classy” moment meant to energize the crowd during a high-stakes matchup.
The Kansas City Chiefs tight end addressed the clip on the May 27 episode of the “New Heights” podcast, which he co-hosts with his brother Jason Kelce, after footage of him downing a beer while sitting courtside at the New York Knicks vs. Cleveland Cavaliers game circulated widely online.

The moment, captured during the NBA Eastern Conference Finals game on May 23, showed Kelce, next to his fiancée, Taylor Swift, standing and quickly finishing a can of Garage Beer — which he and Jason acquired in 2024 — as fans reacted from the stands.
The clip drew mixed reactions on social media, with some users praising the energy of the moment and others criticizing it as inappropriate for a high-profile courtside appearance — particularly in a game the home team he was there in support of was losing.
Kelce pushed back on that framing, saying there was nothing sloppy about it.
“It was a classy chug, Jason,” he said on the podcast. “All right? Didn’t spill one drop. Didn’t crush the can. I’m on the hardwood floor at an NBA game, it could’ve got messy. It was a smooth, classy chug to get the people going. We’re down f—ing 10 points, trying to get some type of energy going in the building.”
Kelce added that the moment was spontaneous and tied to the atmosphere of the game rather than any attempt to create attention.
Clips of the chug spread quickly across social platforms after the game, fueling debate over whether the gesture fit the setting of a courtside celebrity appearance.
Jason Kelce joked with his brother during the podcast, teasing him about being a “bad role model” for the moment.
Travis Kelce said he and Swift attended the game as part of a “date night” and emphasized that the outing was meant to be relaxed.
“Getting Tay back to Cleveland and showing her my roots is always something I love doing,” he said. “This was me just having a fun date night, knowing I love going to basketball games.”
He also clarified speculation that he had fallen asleep during parts of the game, explaining that he was reacting to the Cavaliers’ late-game struggles rather than dozing off.
