UK-based gin producer, Warner’s Distillery has unveiled a first-of-its-kind rum spiced with local botanicals and dandelion root. The distillery harvests, drys, and roasts local dandelion roots to give the rum a unique spice inspired by the British countryside.
Warner’s Distillery is known for its innovative gins that use botanicals sourced from the surrounding area. The brand has the belief that “fresh botanicals taste…well, better.” The rum’s conception evolved from a 2019 gin innovation project that set out to use ingredients that could be found only within a bee’s flight of the farm in Northamptonshire. The idea took off and the distillery set out to make a botanical spiced rum flavored with dandelion.
“Every now and again manna falls from heaven and lands in a bottle and we’re so excited to finally let this amazing liquid out of the bag!” said co-founder of Warner’s Distillery, Tom Warner. “In true Warner’s style, we’re crafting innovative flavors from nature while also creating the most amazing tasting spirit. We’re all very proud of where we’ve ended up with our first-born rum – uniquely spiced by the British countryside. We love it and we can’t wait to see what you think.”
Warner’s Spiced Botanical Rum is made from a white Caribbean rum base that is then distilled with roasted dandelion root, brown bananas too ripe to sell, discarded orange peels and spices including smoky black cardamom, cinnamon, and pink peppercorn. After distillation, even more roasted dandelion root is added alongside orange peel, cassia and sarsaparilla to give the rum a stronger flavor and aroma as well as the rum’s golden hue.
The Warner’s team now cultivates 600 square meters of dandelions, with each bottle of rum to help support more than 750 bee flights.
“In the process of building this innovative liquid we’ve learned just how versatile and sustainable the humble dandelion is,” added co-founder Tina Warner. “It is a hardy plant that some may call a weed and in addition to the number of pollinators it supports, the plant itself has multiple uses and we’re excited to be the first to put it into a super-premium spirit.”
Find Warner’s Spiced Botanical Rum on the distillery’s website. The 40% ABV rum sells for £36 ($44 US) for a 700ml bottle.
